Twitter now called ?: Then and now

/ March 20, 2026

Twitter, is classified as a micro blogging social media networking website, unlike traditional social media sites that allows the user to be able to post quite a bit of characters, Twitter on the other hand limited, the amount of characters can be typed. It originally allowed 140 characters and usernames, URLs, hashtags, images, emojis all counted toward 140 characters limit some of these did not just count as one, but they counted as four or five characters.

Over the years, Twitter has made changes to how much characters usernames, URLs, hashtags, images, emojis would count toward 140 character limit, then later on decided to make usernames, URLs, hashtags, images, emojis not count as much letting people be able to share a little more. eventually, Twitter expanded the character limit from 140 to 280 and now 10,000 characters for Twitter Blue subscribers.

Then: Before Elon Musk purchased Twitter verified accounts were only available to media personality, actors and actresses, Government officials, major brands and corporations, influencers (although I do think that is quite subjective), and other people who twitter demon to be notable (I think that is quite subjective.)

Now: When Elon Musk purchase Twitter he decided to change the whole entire verification system, which some people who are verified where quite upset because it wasn’t something just exclusive for them, but now everyone was able to get verified as part of the Twitter Blue subscription. Toward the end of last year 2022 quite a bit of celebrities, businesses, and brands we’re all being impersonated. One company in particular was being impersonated that made national headlines was Eli Lilly by saying that insulin is now free. After the chaotic in debacle that unfolded with the Twitter blue subscription launch, it was temporally put on hold until some minor adjustments could be made, then re-launched to reduce the amount of impersonations.

Then: in the past, you can name your screen name pretty much anything you want, even if your intention was not trying to intentionally impersonate anyone. on Twitter, it is always been against the terms and services to impersonate anyone in anyone in violation of impersonation would immediately have their account suspended.

Now: while the policy with impersonation still remains the same where in the past you couldn’t personate anyone and still today you cannot impersonate anyone, however what has changed is you cannot have an account that looks like a someone else’s account as that would be considered to be impersonating, however if you want your account to look like someone else you must put “WQYU (Parody)” and I believe also in the bio as well.

So, what does the word “parody” mean? On Twitter the word “parody” means the Twitter account that says ”WQYU (Parody)” is not an account that is owned, controlled, affiliated or operates on the behalf of wqyu.com, this means this is a fan account. When an account says ”WQYU” than it would implied it is an authentic account that is s owned, controlled, affiliated or operates on the behalf of wqyu.com for example. even if the account has a blue checkmark.

Then: traditionally accounts with a blue checkmark means Twitter has confirmed the authenticity that the account truly belongs to the person, organization, including companies brands, etc.

Now: When Elon Musk took over Twitter, he decided to change that so now the blue checkmark means that person subscribe to Twitter blue subscription.

Twitter added two different checkmarks along with a small icon.

Blue checkmark equals the user has subscribe to Twitter Blue (has been manually verified to ensure that they are not really impersonating anyone). this will vary depending on if you subscribe month-to-month or purchase a year subscription and how do you subscribe if you subscribe through Apple, it will be more costly as opposed to subscribing through the web browser would be a little cheaper option.

Yellow/goldish checkmark – similar to the Twitter blue subscription, however, this one is mainly used for companies, organizations in which unlocks additional features that are not available to Twitter blue subscribers like allowing WQYU to have its affiliate listed and be verified plus on the affiliate account, it will display a small square usually the logo of the Company or brand and when clicked it will say this account is an affiliate of WQYU. quite expensive, but like the Twitter blue subscription, the price will vary depending on if you subscribe through the app or for the web browser.

Gray checkmark – this is reserved for government officials like politicians, and government organizations. not sure about the price for this
