Is AM radio just hanging on by the thread, where it might as well be dead?

/ March 20, 2026

The other day I turned on the radio an wanted to see if a AM station was on the air, and sadly after turning the tuner from left to right not one station could be heard except for WSVS-AM unlike FM where you have a lot of stations to chose from.

In someways AM radio is slowing dyeing, car manufactures have wanted to remove AM from the radio and only leave FM and paid radio like XM radio, or other music services such as Amazon Music. Thankfully their has been a push back from the public and from the government to keep AM radio on life support as AM could be removed from cars, and next could also be removed from radios all together.

So what happens to AM radio stations, if AM is dropped? Not all radio stations have access to the FM airways and in the case of the Alabama radio station that yea had their tower stolen they had to stop broadcasting as they where not broadcasting on the AM frequency. This could cause them to lose

however they are also on FM as well, 97.1 FM.

I could not get any AM station expect for one and that was WSVS-AM
