While I may not be an expert, I am learning a lot about the Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor, and I hope this article helps you out as well. If you choose to purchase one, hopefully this guide will be able to provide some information on where to start.

Prerequisites:

  • You will need two Ethernet cables, with a combined length not exceeding 1,000 feet.
  • You will need a PoE injector (PoE = Power over Ethernet). (If you do not have a PoE injector, you can get one on Amazon for about nine dollars.)
  • You will need access to your router to connect one end of the Ethernet cable.
  • Time and patience, just for good measure.

Ordering:

  • You can purchase the Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor directly from Helium, which costs $499.
  • If you are not willing to spend $499, you can look on a third-party marketplace, where you may be lucky enough to purchase one for $200, $100, or even around $60.
(If you choose to purchase one from a third-party seller rather than directly from Helium, I strongly recommendasking the seller whether they are able to transfer ownership.)

Transfer ownership:

This applies only to those purchasing a Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor from a third-party seller. If the seller is not able to transfer ownership for any reason, it is very unlikely that Helium customer support will be able to transfer ownership from the account it is currently registered to into yours.

This is extremely important because ownership is required in order to administer the Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor and earn rewards.

Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor has arrived. Now what?

The first thing you should do with any electronic device you purchase is carefully inspect the box to ensure it is not damaged. If it is damaged, take a few pictures. Then open the box and check whether anything inside is damaged. If so, take additional pictures and contact either Helium customer support or the seller to see how they would like to proceed.

This can be frustrating and disappointing, but please remember that neither Helium nor the third-party seller is intentionally responsible for items arriving damaged, so please remain respectful.

If nothing is damaged, unpack everything and verify that you have the following:

  • 1 × Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor
  • 1 × mounting bracket that attaches to the Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor
  • 1 × mounting bracket that attaches to the pole
  • 4 × screws to attach the mounting bracket to the back of the Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor
  • 2 × metal straps
  • 2 × screws to secure the mounting brackets together
  • 1 × Ethernet cable protector

The items listed above are what come in the box. However, there are additional items you will need:

  • 1 × PoE injector
  • 2 × Ethernet cables (combined length not exceeding 1,000 feet)
  • 1 × screwdriver
  • 1 × ladder if you choose to mount it high

(When using a ladder, make sure it is on a sturdy, flat surface. If a ladder is unavailable or you do not feel comfortable using one, you can mount the hotspot facing out a second-story window.)

Configure and test: New vs. used (transfer of ownership)

I personally recommend configuring your Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor before mounting it. This allows you to complete onboarding (if new) or confirm functionality (if ownership was transferred) and verify that you have all necessary equipment.

NEW:

If you purchased your Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor directly from Helium, you will be required to download and install the Helium Mobile Builder app. The same login credentials used for your Helium account are used for the app.

If you are not already a Helium subscriber, you will still need to download the app and sign up.

Once you have completed the sign-up process or logged in, tap Deploy, then tap Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor, and follow the directions carefully.

USED (TRANSFERRED OWNERSHIP):

If you purchased your hotspot from a third-party seller and ownership was transferred to you, the device should appear in your account as soon as you sign in to the app.

After configuration—which is minimal—you should be ready to proceed. I strongly recommend taking a picture of the QR code affixed to the back of the Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor for future reference, even though you will likely never need it again.

Where to mount?

You should mount the hotspot where it provides maximum coverage, allowing as many people as possible to connect. According to Helium’s website, the front of the device is where the Wi-Fi signal is transmitted.

The hotspot can be mounted outdoors on a pole, exposed to the elements, or installed in a protected location such as under a porch, deck, or similar structure.

The Wi-Fi networks:

There are three different Wi-Fi networks that the Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor can broadcast:

  • Helium — Available exclusively to Helium Mobile subscribers. Regardless of plan, subscribers who have completed the Wi-Fi profile setup will automatically connect when within range.
  • Helium Free Wi-Fi — Open to everyone, even non-subscribers. (The host can enable or disable this through the Helium Mobile Builder app or website.)
  • Custom network (<any name>) — Similar to a traditional router, allowing the host to create a private network for employees, POS systems, security cameras, and more.

You can enable or disable these networks individually or all at once, depending on whether you use the app or the website.

By default, the Helium network is password-protected and cannot be disabled in the app, though it can be disabled via the website.

Helium Free Wi-Fi is disabled by default but can be toggled on or off via both the app and website.

The custom network is disabled by default and can only be created and enabled through the website, not the app.

Admin (administrator) interface:

The Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor does not have a traditional administrator interface, which can make managing settings feel somewhat fragmented.

  • Helium Mobile Builder app: Reboot the device and enable or disable Helium Free Wi-Fi.
  • Website: Reboot the device and enable or disable all three Wi-Fi networks.

Earning and getting your rewards:

Some people earn a significant amount, typically by operating multiple Helium Mobile Hotspots in high-traffic areas such as airports, hotels, laundromats, or stores. Residential locations generally see much lower earnings.

Since owning my Helium Mobile Hotspot Outdoor, I have earned approximately $0.50. While not much, it is still interesting to see it working.

Rewards are calculated roughly every six hours and placed into a pending state, repeating continuously.

How to claim your rewards (earnings):

If you are unfamiliar with cryptocurrency, this section may feel intimidating. Cryptocurrency transactions are final—there is no undo or stop payment—so it is important to pay close attention.

Unlike traditional banks, cryptocurrency is decentralized, meaning you directly control your funds.

Getting SOL (Solana):

Everyone has their own opinion on which platform to use. For the purpose of this article, I am using Coinbase. This is not an endorsement or sponsorship; it is simply the platform I found easiest to use.
