What is the difference between being fired versus being laid off versus furloughed?

/ March 20, 2026

It is important to know the difference between each of them. So in this quick article you’ll understand the difference between being fired versus being laid off versus being furloughed.

Fired: When an employee is fired from his or her job he or she may have repeatedly violated company policy in which they may have been warned several times that they are not in compliance with company policy and because they have continued to violate company policy it resulted the employee being terminated.

If the employee’s actions are egregious enough the employee may be terminated effective immediately without receiving any warnings.

Laid off: Generally speaking when an employee is laid off they may be warning or not warned ahead of time however when employees laid off it is no fault of the employee at all. It means that the employee did not violate any company policies or do anything that would result in immediate termination.

Furloughed: Furloughed means the employee has not been terminated because of any fault of their own or they have been laid off where their employment has ended, it simply means that the employee still has his/her job however they are prohibited from working, and while he/she is currently furloughed he/she will not get paid.
