Hurricane Sandy: before and after and today

/ March 20, 2026

I saw an article on vice.com talking about how Hurricane Sandy that happened seven years ago in 2012 devastated Oakwood Beach.

The article talks about how some residents allowed the government to purchase their house and to turn it back into Marshland, while some residents looks like they did not opt-in and other structures are vacant but boarded up.

I decided to take a little drive via Google street to see what it look like before Hurricane Sandy and after and what it looks like to today.

The transformation going back 2007 in some areas and in some areas can only go back to 2002 and looking soon after if available 2012 you can see some of the damage in a few jump forward to the latest which is 2018 it’s almost a complete night and day as if nothing ever existed here other than a few traces of dips in the curb was a possible sign that there may have been a driveway leading up to a structure.

Some of the houses I don’t think should have been demolished because some of them don’t look like they were damaged all that much and then there are some such as this one in particular where the house was ripped off of its foundation and pushed maybe the length of for semi trucks.

Look at the photo below, this house, it look like it is very well taken care of and a new driveway or parking area.

House before Hurricane Sandy

According to Google Streets this photo photo above is currently showing September 2012, jump forward to January 2013 you can see you can see where this house is now located, it looks like this house was ripped off of its foundation and pushed maybe the length of for semi trucks, as seen in the photo below.

Same house, just looks like house was ripped off of its foundation and pushed maybe the length of for semi trucks.

Jump forward to the latest photo which is 2018 you can see that house no longer exist.

Below is the view from Google Streets.
