If my domain name is set to expire within 30 days or has already expired, can I transfer my domain name from one registrar to another?

Yes, you have the legal right to transfer your domain name even if it is set to expire within 30 days or if it’s already expired, when you transfer the domain name and you pay the transfer fee the registrar who will be getting your domain name, will extend your registration for one year or whatever the minimum term is i.e. 1 or 2 years.

Domain name registrars, cannot force you or require you to pay a renewal before allowing you to transfer your domain name, see, I ICANN’s FAQs number 10 for the source https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/name-holder-faqs-2017-10-10-en.

Some people say if I transfer my domain name from one registrar to another, I’m not able to update the name servers, is that true or false?

False. If you transfer your domain name from one registrar to another, you will be able to update your name servers. If you do update your name servers, it may take affect immediately or it may take one or two minutes to 24 to 48 hours for the changes to go into affect.

Can my register stop me from transferring my domain name to another registrar?

Yes, your register can stop you from transferring your domain name to another registrar however, they are required to give a reason why they are stopping the transfer.

Here are a few possible reasons:
