How to install, update or reinstall TikTok? Is it possible?

/ March 20, 2026

While access to the popular video social media site in the United States is available on a temporary basis Apple, Google, Microsoft* and Amazon all have decided to not make the app available for the public to install, update or even reinstall if you previously had TikTok on your device.

Unlike Windows computers where you can download the .exe package and if the source like Apple, Google, Microsoft* and Amazon if they disable access in the App Store you have no way of getting access, unless you look at alternatives methods and that is only if it is geo-restricted.

* = Microsoft is a bit of an exception while Microsoft does have an App Store like Apple, Google and Amazon. You can also download programs and install them like the traditional way before Microsoft got into creating something called the App Store. So if you have a Windows computer, you’re not entirely out of luck yet.

Permanently removed:

If the app is removed from the App Store like GunBroker for example there is no way of installing, updating or even reinstalling if you previously had it on your device. This means regards to where you are located it is not available.

Geo restrictions:

A geo restriction (geographic restriction) is when specific content is not available to you in a particular location for various reasons such us but not limited to copyrights, license agreement, or a government forces a ban in witch anyone in the particular location would be restricted.

In the case of TikTok, this is not permanently removed, it is Geo restricted based on the country.

Following the Sunday, January 19 2025 at midnight, the ban on ByteDance’s family of website’s and apps went into effect, however President Trump promised to delay the ban by giving them 90 days which was Richmond for them to outright sell TikTok to an American company althoughit is slightly shifted from outright selling TikTok to an American company having majority control over TikTok. If no deal can be reached with a 90 days TikTok and along with ByteDance‘s family of website’s will be not accessible in the United States.

Following the 90 day grace ByteDance’s family of websites all back online, but the apps still remain unavailable in the United States as Apple, Google, Microsoft* and Amazon are not taking a chance in the fear of being penalized for allowing us to be able to download and install.

* = Microsoft being the exception as someone can download and install the app if they can get the executable file from a third-party and install it onto their computer, just not put Microsoft’s App Store.

So what does this mean if the apps are no longer available in the App Store, will I be able to install, update or reinstall? Will I be able to continue to use the app or not?

No, periodically apps, receive updates to fix bugs, security exploits, add features, optimize for better performance but with the apps no longer available it means that you will not be able to receive any updates. If any bugs are found, no more security updates to fix and close any security exploits, no new features will be added, cannot be updated for better optimization to run smoothly with newer updates.

Fo the time being you will be able to continue to use the app as you normally would, however I would imagine over the time as the app starts to become outdated it could no longer become functionable as the new update is not compatible.
