How to use AirDrop on an iPhone and iPad?

/ March 20, 2026

You can send someone photos, videos, documents, and any downloads without having to send them an email, texting them, uploading them to a computer or installing any special software for both the sender and receiver.

We first need to start on the recipient/receiver and as they will need to make a change if the sender does not see their device showing up in the available list of people to AirDrop to.

Recipient/receiver

If the sender says they cannot find your device. You will need to make a change on your device in order to broadcast the name of your device i.e. John’s iPhone, so the sender can see your device showing up in the available list of people to AirDrop to.

On your device (recipient/receiver) tap on “settings” > in the search box enter “AirDrop” without quotations, you may see two settings for more, the settings that we need to access is the one that looks like a gear as the icon and it will say “AirDrop” and under that it will say “general” both without quotations, tap on AirDrop > now that you are in the AirDrop settings you’ll have three AirDrop settings that you can choose from see the table below.

Receiving off – when you have the checkmark checked for receiving off, this means that no one will be able to AirDrop anything to you, not even people in your contacts.

Contacts only – when you have the checkmark checked for contacts only this means that only people that are in your contacts will be able to AirDrop to you those who are not in your contacts will not be able to AirDrop anything to you.

Everyone for 10 minutes – when you have the checkmark checked for everyone for 10 minutes this means that everyone will be able to AirDrop something to you.

For this guide, we will be using everyone for 10 minutes and don’t worry soon as you accept the content that you want to receive from the sender, you can change it back to contacts only or receiving off and the changes will take affect immediately.

Change the setting to everyone for 10 minutes. Send it you receive a pop-up message to either decline or except you can change the settings back to either receiving off or contacts only.

Sender

Depending on what you’re choosing to airdrop to the recipient/receiver, the directions may be slightly different for this article we will be using pictures and video. In your photo gallery either on your iPad or iPhone tap on select > select the photos and/or videos you want to AirDrop to recipient/receiver > in the lower left-hand corner you should see what looks like a square with an arrow, pointing up, tap on that > on the left-hand corner an icon will be blue, and it will look like a tower with a signal coming off and below. It will say AirDrop, tap on that icon > now you should see the recipient/receiver, iPad or iPhone or computer tap on the recipient/receivers name.

Recipient/receiver

From the sender, you should now receive a pop-up that is going to ask you if you wish to decline or accept. If you accept what the sender is sending you tap on except and if they are photos or videos, they will now be in your library, so just tap on Photos and you should see what you received.

Now that you have received something from the sender, you can now change your settings back to accepting off or contacts only if you are not receiving anything else.

Sender

Now that the recipient/receiver has received what you sent them, you can click on the X  to close out of this.

Troubleshooting:

Make sure that you do not have airplane mode turned on

This will apply to the sender, receiver/recipient: you need to be within close proximity of each other. Internet connection
