ICE stands for immigration and customs enforcement, ICE is a United State federal government agency that is responsible for enforcing immigration laws such conducting background checks for those who wish to seek asylum, obtain a student visa, work visa, visitors or tourist visa. Upon a judge issuing an order for removal on an individual the agency is responsible for ensuring the order for removal is carried out.

According to several major news outlets, they are reporting that on Monday, November 28, 2022, on or about 9:45 AM someone from ICE was doing routine maintenance when somehow someone unintentionally uploaded an excel document containing personal identifiable information (PII), along with immigration information of more than 6,000 noncitizens in ICE custody, to ice.gov, the website that is publicly accessible to anyone. ICE did not specify exactly where on the site this was made available, but A humans rights organization named The Human Rights First immigration organization, notified the government agency at 1:53pm and at 2:04pm, the personally identifiable information tab from ICE.gov was removed.

Some news organizations are saying “A-numbers of 6,252 noncitizens seeking protection”, so I am not sure if this is the exact number of individuals affected and if these individuals that are on this Excel document that was accidentally made public if all or some is currently in custody of ice and seeking protection.

The government agency is notifying all of those who are affected according to several news outlets, according to several news outlets the agency is also conducting an investigation and part of their investigation ICE will identify through IP addresses entities that accessed the information and the official says ICE is monitoring the internet for any reposting of the data.

Unless all of these individuals are currently in the custody of ICE or they are in communication with their immigration attorney I think they likely of ICE being able to notify every single person who is affected is probably not going to be very hard and probably some if there is going to be a lawsuit against the agency probably some won’t show as they fear they might be deported.
