Roundcube free skins a.k.a. themes

Whether you call Roundcube’s designs ‘themes’ or by their official name ‘skins,’ it’s really up to you. What’s surprising is that despite Roundcube’s popularity, there are actually very few free skins available.

By default, Roundcube comes with its own skin, but personally, I wasn’t too happy with it. One reason is that it removed a feature I found useful — and important from a safety standpoint — the ability to turn off mail preview. Fortunately, this change only affected the skin and not Roundcube’s core code. By switching back to the previous default skin, ‘Larry,’ the option to disable mail preview is available again.

The skins listed below are what I’d call ‘plug-and-play.’ All you need to do is download, unzip, and upload them to your server’s skins folder — no edits or modifications required.

Once you’ve uploaded the skin to your server, switching to it is simple. Just log in to your webmail, go to Settings > User Interface, choose the skin (theme) you want, and click Save.

If you’d like to set a skin as the default for everyone, you can do that too. The login screen will still look the same, but after logging in, users will see the skin you’ve set. Of course, they can still switch back to the default or pick a different skin if they prefer.

Now, if you want your chosen skin to load as the default for everyone (instead of Roundcube’s standard skin), you’ll need to make a quick edit to the configuration file. Here’s how:**

  1. Download the file: [roundcube]/config/config.inc.php
  2. Open it with a text editor (like Notepad).
  3. Add or update this line: $config[‘skin’] = ‘skin_name_here’; (replace skin_name_here with the actual name of the skin’s folder)
  4. Save the file and re-upload it to your server.

That’s it! Next time you or anyone else logs in, Roundcube will load your chosen skin by default. Users can still switch to another skin if they want, but your default setting will stay in place.

Classic

The Classic skin witch was the default skin when Roundcube was installed at the time, however they have since changed the default skin when Roundcube is installed. The Classic skin is all white and when hovering over buttons they turn red, along with the links.

Larry

The skin called “Larry”, this was an new skin that came with Roundcube when Roundcube was installed at the time. This is a bit different from the Classic skin that was all white and when hovering over buttons they turn red, along with the links, Larry on the other hand is mostly dark gray with black buttons, they also added the menu and email folders like mail, spam, trash, etc is a light green blue-ish beside only being mostly one color.

Elastic

Unlink the previous two Classic and Larry, Elastic did something that I think was NOT an improvement but something that will not make me use the skin and that is the ability to remove the preview screen, thankfully this is only done at the skin level not the code level so using Classic and Larry can disable preview screen.

The next set of skins are free however they did not come with the original install of RoundCube, they are from other creators who have made their skin free or have published a light version to more give a sample of their paid version.

Outlook

This theme takes inspiration from Larry while adopting an Outlook-inspired color scheme, featuring sleek grays and black for a modern look.

Harry

The skin Harry is a clone of Larry, but unlike Larry that is black and gray, this skin should be blue themed. While I did download this skin and installed it, I did not notice really any difference in Harry as what is shown on the download page.

Litecube

This skin is free to download. To get it, just add it to your shopping cart and complete checkout (you’ll need to create a free account if you don’t already have one). Once you finish, a license key will appear in your account. To start using the skin, simply open the file “[roundcube]/config/config.inc.php” and add this line of code: $config[‘license_key’] = ‘yuor_license_key_here’;

Fredsted

The author/creator named this skin “Fredsted”. The login page have a nice background image unlike most of other the skins that have a solid background witch added a more of a custom look and feel. After signing in, the theme is more of black and gray with the reading area of the emails is white.

While I did try to use this one, this one did not work for my install of RoundCube, maybe if some tweaking to the source this could starting working, but I will save that for another time.
