The social media networking boom, is this good or bad?

/ March 20, 2026

In the past couple of years there has been a tremendous boom in new social media platforms then just the traditional social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

MySpace was one of the first social media sites that was used mostly by teens who posted photos and video to people that they have added as there friend and some made there profile public. MySpace was founded 20 years ago (August 1, 2003), I think it would be fair to say they are the digital landline phone that some people have and you can still get an account but most of the population has moved on.

Soon after MySpace was the hottest social media site Facebook came online first started out as a small social media site then expanded to everyone by allowing not only college students but everyone worldwide to join and Facebook is still widely used today after being founded nearly 19 years ago, a year after MySpace. I think it would be safe to call Facebook the legacy social media site. I don’t think Facebook will be replaced as Facebook controls a good chuck of the social media pie.

Three years after Facebook was founded in 2004, a new type of social media was coming online and that is Twitter. Twitter was not like the other two social media sites MySpace and Facebook, Twitter had some limitations for instance, Twitter limited the number of characters a user could post in a single post, if a user made a spelling error the user could not edit the post they had to completely delete it, and re-publish it unlike MySpace and Facebook that allowed posts to be edited.

Years later Google decided to jump in and start their own social media called Google + (Google Plus), but that did not live very long before Google just pulling the plug and closing it down. Google+ was founded in 2011, seven years later after Twitter and eight years after Facebook. Google+ was just a hot mess and did not really have much that users where looking for. In fact I don’t really ever recall using the site.

After the failure of Google+, Facebook and Twitter where the top dogs in the social media space and it would not be for another few years when the boom of a few new sites come online, the first is MeWe in 2012, Rumble in 2013, Gab in 2016, Parler 2018, then Truth Social in 2021 and last to join is Bluesky 2023.

Note: The next few social media sites several people have labeled them as fair right-wing sites to spread conspiracy theories and misinformation. I have no way of saying if this is true or not, but you should always check the source to see if where the information is coming from is credible. This also depends on who you follow.

Over the course of a decade starting in 2012, until today there has been a boom in the creation of various social media networking websites, some similar to Facebook, some similar to Twitter and others similar to YouTube.

2012 MeWe | Never heard of this site and infect did not know what it was until writing this article. Looking at photos it looks a little like Facebook and Twitter into one site.

2013 Rumble | When they opened up, I did create and account with them and have logged into them every so often. They are a video sharing website that is like YouTube but less likely to remove something that maybe considered being a “conspiracy theory or misinformation”.

2016 Gab | Gab, is like a microblogging social media networking website similar to Twitter. When they did open up, I did create an account and every so often I do check them out although I don’t really use them that much and I think other do the same as well.

2018 Parler| Parler is like a microblogging social media networking website similar to Twitter. When they did open up, I did create an account and every so often I do check them out although I don’t really use them that much and I think other do the same as well.

Truth Social 2011 | Truth Social is a website that is very much like Twitter as the site is a microblogging social media networking website and works like Gab and Parler, however this was created by a former U.S. president, Trump. After Trump was removed from almost all of the main platforms Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and I think even MySpace also removed him. Trump decided to make his own microblogging social media site like his beloved megaphone a.k.a. Twitter. Every now and then I do login to Truth Social and make a few posts.

Bluesky Social 2023 | Like many people mostly on the Democratic side strongly dislike the former U.S. President, Donald John Trump, and when Jack Dorsey decided to sell Twitter to Elon Musk, who made several policy changes by not censoring content even though some may classify it as a conspiracy theory or misinformation Muck waned to restore free speech as he claims that did not happen under Jack Dorsey’s ownership and many users are not happy about this among the changes in the verification program.

To me it is not clear why Jack Dorsey wanted to start his own social media site, but when word got out that Dorsey was creating his own social media site Bluesky Social several people want to get from under Musk and follow Dorsey on his new social media site. As of right now Bluesky Social is only allowing people to join by invite.

Between 2022 and 2023 there has been other social media sites coming online, some look almost the same as Twitter by following the same layout and configuration while others have more of there own layout and configuration but still have the follow, repost (a.k.a. re-tweet), fav, and etc.

Some of the new social media sites coming online:

Post and Spoutible in my view looks exactly the same and both look a whole like Twitter. Both are free to join and you can join by filling out the sign-up form.

T2.social – Is still in the very early stage and according to there website, they say that t2.social may not be the official name(1). T2 titles it self “The New Public Square” that is by invite only and the only way seems to join the waiting list, the site has a lot of the same functionality from a non-signed in user like Twitter and the others, but its unclear what the functionality is when a user is signed in. I am guessing it will be the same.

I honestly believe that if the state still requires people to use an invite code in order to sign up, eventually, people are going to get sick and tired of waiting to be on the list or tired of asking others for invite codes for various reasons such as such as limited to: being asked to follow, re-tweet, send a DM and then be told that they need to pay x amount and pay via BTC (bitcoin) or via PayPal and send money to the seller using the family or friend to the buyer pays the fees and the seller pays noting and when paying this way it becomes hard to get your money back of the seller gives noting or gives a fake code that would have never worked or a code that has already been used.

I am already starting to see people are posting that they are losing the momentum and enthusiasm to join the social media site, which that is never a good sign, especially when the site as an even really opened.

I think with few people already losing the momentum and enthusiasm to join and if they decided to heavy censor people and word gets out, if they have privacy issues, long wait lists, etc this could be start to the end without even starting.

In 2003 MySpace was only one social media site however in 2023 we have at least five different social media sites. Some of them are similar to others I think if Bluesky does not require an invite code to signup I think eventually they will have the same fate as the others excluding Facebook and Twitter, or even worse closed like what happened to Google+

Time will only tell.
