What happened to “We the People” on whitehouse.gov?

/ March 20, 2026

At the time when Barack Obama was president of the United States, during his presidency he launched something on whitehouse.gov called “We the People” that allowed anyone to create a petition at petitions.whitehouse.gov and within 30 days if the petition reached threshold or exceeded the threshold number, the petition would then require a response from the White House.

Anyone with computer access could visit petitions.whitehouse.gov > registered with a site > create their petition from a variety of topics ranging from civil rights, environmental, social, economic, military, etc. and given a special link that they could then share and if it reach less than 150 signatures it would appear on petitions.whitehouse.gov for others to see the petition.

To read previous petitions and to read any current petitions visible on petitions.whitehouse.gov or if someone shared a link, linking to a petition account creation, or being signed in was not required. The only time that the user would be required to be signed in is if they are creating or signing a petition.

when Obama left office, Trump decided to keep “We the People” for sometime then sometime during his presidency, he decided to completely do away with “We the People” and when Trump left office, Biden did not resume “We the People”.
