What is the point of Amazon Prime? Is it really worth the monthly or yearly membership? What about for members who live in rural areas?

/ March 20, 2026

for the past few months, I have been debating on whether I should keep my Amazon prime membership or cancel the prime membership so when the term of the prime membership comes to an end, it does not renew. After canceling my prime membership I’m still having this debate whether I made the right decision or should I continue my membership by cancel the request not to renew.

after having a terrible experience with not one but two orders and then chatting with Amazon associates the two incredibly rude associates end of my long debate that I didn’t have on whether I did the right decision or made the wrong decision confirmed that I made the right decision in canceling my Amazon prime membership, that on the Thursday of January 23, 2025 my prime membership benefits will officially end.

I don’t think Amazon is what it used to be, I think it’s someway Amazon has turned into an online bizarre or not even an online bizarre, but just a dumpling ground of products that companies don’t know what to do with by selling it on Amazon, the items sold on Amazon, some of them are just extremely cheap products that are overpriced, riddled with fake reviews, or made up company names selling the exact same item that 50 other sellers are selling for about the same price.

For a few months I have been having this long debate on weather to keep my Amazon Prime membership or just let it expire after looking at the pros and cons and I think to me it’s not worth the monthly membership even thigh shopping on Amazon has some pluses, but the cons is just to big to keep the Amazon Prime membership on going. It’s better to only get Amazon Prime a few times a year.

Amazon Prime makes the shopping a little better as sometimes you do get Amazon Prime exclusive pricing and free shipping on items sold and shipped by Amazon and if Amazon ships the item. When it comes to third-parties sellers that can very, free shipping or do you pay for shipping.

Besides to Amazon Prime exclusive pricing they have sometimes Amazon Prime members also get access to Amazon music and video library.

I thnk a few years ago having Amazon Prime was very good for the value, free shipping on most items, ad-free music and videos, but the times have changed.

Pros

  • Amazon Prime exclusive pricing
  • Free shipping on items sold and shipped by Amazon and if Amazon ships the item. When it comes to third-parties sellers that can very, free shipping or do you pay for shipping.
  • Free retrunes on most items, they do exclude some items.
  • Free access to a large selection of music ad-free.
  • Free access to a large amount of videos w/ ads or w/out ads a discount.
  • Discount at Whole Foods.

Cons:

  • While I do get free shipping, it seems that if you live in a rural area, it can take a week before they ship the order(s) out and then a few days or a week to get what you ordered.
  • While Amazon Prime does give access to a large selection of music I think what they did to Amazon music they took away a benefit of having Amazon Prime. Unless you subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited you are limited to the amount of skips, if you make a playlist they shuffle the playlist and add songs that are simualr and no way to turn this off unless you subscribe to Amazon Music Unlimited and you are limited to the amount of song you can request.
  • Amazon Prime Video was really nice to see most shows without ads, however they have done away with this
