Need to send a fax to someone? Try this app, it works and it’s free*

Today in 2024 sending a fax is almost a thing of the past but it is still a legacy as it is old way of sending documents to another person as opposed to sending emails, texting or using the cloud which has become pretty much a normal practice of sending, and receiving documents.

In 2024 can you still send and receive faxes?

Yes, you can still send faxes to people as long as they accept faxes as it is not the most common way today many thanks to email, texting and using the cloud.

If you want to send a fax with somebody, you still have a few options. Let’s first look at the paid options.

Public library and retailers: Your public library, along with several retailers, such as been unlimited to The UPS store, FedEx Office, PostNet, etc. may offer this service but you should check to see if the location near you offers the service.

Landline: Most commercial businesses have landline telephones, as opposed to only using cell phones, if you have a fax machine or a fax machine/printer if you plug your fax machine or a fax machine/printer combo into the landline phone line you can send a fax out.

Apps free and paid: If you go on the Apple Store, Google Play Store, Microsoft Store there are tons of apps that will allow you to send and receive faxes.

Free v Paid: Which one is right for you?

Whether you choose to use an app, absolutely free, or you choose to pay for the app. Different features will be available along with the subscription term some it may be for a week, it may be monthly, or even a yearly subscription.

When choosing the app if you want to pay for the app or if you want to use it for free, here’s a few things you should consider, how many faxes do you plan on sending out? How many faxes will you need to be sending out and how often i.e. the frequency? Will you need to receive faxes from others? Do you want your own dedicated fax number whenever you send and receive or do you not care if it comes from a random number?

Depending on how you answer, this is going to determine really whether you will be a right match for using an app for free or if you should seriously consider paying for the app.

For me, since I’m only sending a document to one recipient the free version will be the best match, I always have the option to later upgrade to a paid subscription if I should desire in the future.

The instructions to install this app are the same for the free and paid version, and we will be using Apple iOS since I will be stalling this app on my iPhone/iPad.

To download this app, tap on the link to go to the download page at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fax-plus-receive-send-fax/id1170782544.

Tap on the blue says “Get”.

You may need to enter a passcode or username & password to authenticate the purchase as seen in the photo below.

After you have authenticated the purchase, it will then install, during the installation, you will see a circle once the installation is complete you’ll see a blue button that says “open “tap on open.

After you open the for the first time you’ll have two options which is to sign in with email or sign in with your Google account, for this, we will be using our email. Tap on “Sign up with email”.

Now we have the registration page, you will be required to provide first and last name, valid email address, password, and you will need to confirm the password.

Password should consist of letters A through Z, 0 through 9 and a special character I.e. @ or a dot. Example password could be “Iamhere@themall.tld”.

When you are done tap on “join now”, you will be prompted to confirm your email address that it is typing correctly, that you agree to the terms.

You’ll be required to enter your mobile cell phone number.

Phone numbers that are considered to be voice over IP (VoIP) will not be allowed to be used as it will give an error message.

You should receive a text message that will consist of six numbers that you will need to enter in order to verify. Once you enter the numbers, it will automatically go to the next screen.

The next series of screens that we will be seeing will be asking you basically permissions on what the app can do such as sending you notifications, asking you if the app has permission to access your contacts, and of course, whether you agree to allow the app to send you notifications, access your contacts. You always have the option to later change those settings by revoking access at any time.

If you plan on using this app for free, the most likely, you will only receive one notification, which is a welcome notification and possibly anything that is important that that the app developers want to bring to your attention since free users will not be able to receive faxes. For this I chose “turn on notifications”, if you allow the next screen will bring up the dialog box that you need to tap on allow, if you choose not now you can skip the step below.

From the previous step if you chose to allow notifications, you’re seeing the pop up that is going to allow notifications.

Much like the pop-up that was asking for allowing to send notifications. This is asking if the app has permission to access your contacts, for this, I chose not now, and I immediately went into the app itself to start using if I chose “use contacts” it would Bring up the Settings dialogue for me to allow then it would bring me right into the app. Again, I always have the choice to revoke access or to allow access.

CONGRATULATIONS! You’re now ready to start using the app.

To allow or revoke access tap on Settings > scroll down until you see FAX.PLUS and tap on FAX.PLUS > now tap on a Setting you wish to change by moving the slider back-and-forth. Green means allow, Gray means not allowed.)
