A complete walk-through of Bluesky Social

Currently Bluesky Social it’s only allowing people to sign up via invite code, but in the mean time while you wait this article will give you a complete walk-through of Bluesky Social so when you receive your invitation either through email or from a third-party you’ll be able to use the social media platform like a pro.

Blue sky social is available on iOS operating system for Apple and for Android users as well. A later article we will cover the apps, if you want to know how to signup for Bluesky social check out our article titled ”How to sign up for Bluesky Social?”.

If you are currently waiting for a blue sky social invitation code or if you received one I’m not really sure what to do next hopefully the sky will be able to give you a general idea.

After you have gone through the sign-up process or when you login the first page you’ll see it’s his page as seen below. This page is the “what’s hot” page even though the blue line is under “following”.

Still using the same image as seen above let’s take a walk through the bottom navigation starting from left to right. The icon that looks like a house is a home button, The icon with a magnifying glass is search, the icon what looks like a bell is notification and last icon is your profile. The blue circle that you see right above the icon for your profile is where you will compose a 300 character or less post.

Much like Twitter starting from left to right, bottom working our way up, Icon that looks like a thought is the replies, next is the share button and last heart icon each will indicating how many replies, shares and how many people liked a.k.a. clicking on the heart.

The next section will be the person’s post and above the post will contain starting from left to right you’ll see the persons profile icon followed by an great text will be the person’s username or handle, their name, the date and time or if it was posted recently it will say X amount of seconds or minutes.

At the very top starting from the left side to the right side, you see the blue icon that is the menu icon will cover that in a minute then you see following and what’s new.

The menu

In the screenshot below if you click on the blue icon as mentioned above it will reveal a menu that will appear from the left side starting from the top working our way to the bottom.

By default if you have not uploaded a profile image you’ll see the default blue image that doesn’t specify a gender. Blow the default image you’ll see your handle name into a URL. For me it is wqyu.bsky.social, then again, below this you’ll see the number of followers, the number of following, below this the number of invitation codes that you have available. This account was recently created therefore it is currently not eligible to invite anyone as this will be made available what’s the user has been on blue sky for a little bit.

Next section you’ll see links to search, home, notifications, moderation, profile, settings and wait at the bottom feedback.

Search

In the screenshot below is the search page, to search for a user, enter a name i.e. Jack and a list of users will appear, to search for posts with the name Jack, press enter . To go back to the menu click on cancel.

Notifications

this page will contain the notifications like if somebody for example makes a comment on one of your post, shares one of your post or likes one of your post much like Twitter and other social media sites. See the photo below. to get back to the main menu click on the house icon located at the bottom left-hand corner.

Moderation a.k.a. Self censorship

The moderation page has quite a few settings that you should be aware of starting from the top working our way down to the bottom.

Content filtering a.k.a. censorship – Sometimes if you are accessing social media at work, at a public place where others are able to see your screen you may want to sensor out certain content from appearing and that is where the constant filtering comes into play, here you can filter out explicit content, show, Warren or block accounts that are claiming to be someone A.k.a. impersonating

Muted list – You can subscribe to mute lists to automatically mute all of the users they include. Mute lists are public but your subscription to a mute list is private. (Copied directly from Bluesky.)

Muted accounts – I called this basically a soft block where you don’t actually block somebody but you just don’t see anything that they post or you may see very little of what they post.

Blocked accounts – I think this is pretty self-explanatory pretty much operates the same on practically all of the major platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube etc. If you block someone they cannot really do anything. Heads up! For example if you block @baduser, the blocked person may have a second account and/or they maybe able to see what you post if they sign out.

See the photo gallery below:

Profile

To see your profile, click on profile and you can see your profile. This will show your posts similar to Twitter. Note: You may see https://bsky.app/profile/<yourname>.bsky.social or https://staging.bsky.app/profile/<yourname>.bsky.social, this is depending on where you signed in. If you signed in at https://staging.bsky.app or https://bsky.app your username and password is the same, just if you are signed in at https://staging.bsky.app and you try to just access https://bsky.app you will need to resigned in and vice versa.

The profile looks a little like Twitter. The large blue area is the background image, the round circle with a person in it, is the profile images, under that is your name of what you chose, by default it is the same as your handle, under that is followers, following and posts (all of them will have numbers) and under this is posts, posts and replies and likes and below is your posts and/or replies depending if you clicked on “posts” or “posts and replies” or “likes”.

When viewing your profile you can search for a user, enter a name i.e. Jack and a list of users will appear, to search for posts with the name Jack, press enter.

Below the search box is the Privacy Policy and Terms and a way for you to give feedback.

Below this is the number of invite codes (newly created accounts do not have invites.)

Last is the ability to change the site from while and black text to black and white text.

Settings

On the settings page some of the information will be a repeat of what has been seen before while some of the information will not be a repeat.

Starting from the top to the bottom:

Account will display your email that they have on file. (Note this photo has been edited, the only thing that has been edited is the email address.)

Singed in as will show you the list of accounts and the currant one your signed into. You can also add an account ether creating a new account (invite code requited) or adding an already created account.)

Invite a friend will display the number of invite codes you have. (newly created accounts do not have invites.)

Advanced will have app passwords, content languages, change my handle.

Danger Zone, is a button to delete your account.

Developers Tools will have system log and storybook.

As I did this complete walk-through of Bluesky Social I was able to see what the site has and what the site does not have as it’s currant stage. I think the site is less cluttered with ads, trending hash-tags, user accounts, etc like Twitter.

One thing I did notice when I entered a search term i.e. Trump for example, a users account was labeled as “Impersonation” with the user profile image blurred and a small red-ish circle with an exclamation and the post hidden from view, but was still searchable, but requires anyone who wants to see the posts to click on show. (Note: The photo has been edited, the username and the handle has been edited, nothing else has been edited.)
